Directory Opus: A Comprehensive File Manager for Power Users

Directory Opus by GPSoftware is a full-featured file manager for Windows intended to replace or augment Windows Explorer. Available in Light and Pro editions and built on a modern 64-bit architecture, it provides extensive customization, automation and file-handling tools aimed at users who require more control and flexibility over everyday and advanced file workflows.

Tabbed and Dual-Pane Listers for Flexible Navigation

Directory Opus supports tabbed windows and optional dual-pane listers that allow multiple folders to be open within a single window and facilitate side-by-side file comparison and transfers. Each lister can be configured with custom layouts, toolbars and keyboard shortcuts, and folder formats can be saved to preserve view and sorting preferences for distinct tasks.

File Operations, Batch Tools and Performance Features

Integrated copy/move queue with pause and resume capabilities for managing large transfers

Advanced batch renaming with live preview, regular-expression support, metadata tokens and reusable presets

Archive handling with drag-and-drop creation and extraction; support for additional formats via plugins

Duplicate-file detection, folder synchronization and folder comparison tools to assist with cleanup and backup preparation

Previewing, Metadata and Content Indexing

The viewer pane previews images, video thumbnails, text and office documents without launching separate applications. Directory Opus reads and edits common metadata standards such as EXIF and IPTC for images and standard audio tags, offers custom columns for metadata display, and provides search filters and content-indexing options to locate files efficiently.

Remote Access, Integration and Virtual Organization

Built-in connectivity for FTP, SFTP and WebDAV to access remote servers and cloud-hosted storage

Shell integration to ensure context-menu operations and file-type actions behave consistently with the Windows shell

Support for collections and virtual folders to group and organize files without altering their physical locations

Automation, Customization and Scripting Support

Automation is a core capability: users can create button macros, combine built-in commands, or write scripts via COM using VBScript, JScript and other compatible languages. Toolbars, menus and hotkeys are highly customizable, enabling the construction of tailored workflows and repeatable file-management actions.

Image Handling and Extensibility

Image-related features include thumbnail displays, metadata viewing and EXIF-based rotation, plus a full-screen viewer for quick inspection. An extensible plugin architecture permits additional format support and improved preview fidelity for specialized media types.

Portability, Security and Support

Portable mode for running the application from removable media while retaining user settings

Regular maintenance updates and documentation provided by GPSoftware, with an online knowledge base for reference

Options to work within system security and user-account frameworks for managed environments

Licensing, Trial and Editions

Directory Opus is offered in Light and Pro editions to address different user needs. A fully functional trial version is available for evaluation prior to purchase, and perpetual licenses include defined upgrade and license-transfer policies.

Suitable Use Cases

Power users and IT professionals who require repeatable, high-control file workflows

Photographers, designers and media managers needing rich metadata access and robust previewing

Users seeking an alternative to Windows Explorer with extensive customization and automation options

Notable Strengths

Comprehensive customization and automation capabilities for building tailored workflows

Feature-rich Pro edition with scripting, advanced search and remote access tools

Tools for managing large transfers and complex file operations, including a queued transfer system

Ongoing development, thorough documentation and vendor support resources
